The latest rumors are the new Kindle will have higher contrast, high resolution, integrated (backlit) lighting, and eight weeks of battery life, even when using the light. Hey, you, get out of your genre! Try a book outside your usual tastes!

In our Kindle forums, member Roz Morris has written an intriguing post about reading books outside one's usual tastes... and being surprised by it!

Roz had to read some chick-lit because of a freelance writing assignment. In her words: "It's not a genre I'd felt tempted to read before and probably wouldn't have to this day. But duty called so I picked up Sophie Kinsella's Shopaholic & Baby. Really not my kind of book - and I was imagining a cliche-ridden dumb-girl story about someone growing a little wiser while pregnant."

And the results: "I thoroughly enjoyed every minute. It was sharp, sassy, well paced, deftly plotted, very funny and executed with aplomb. Sophie Kinsella is a terrific storyteller and her characters are perfectly judged for a slightly daffy but very believable story world. I've now got her novel Remember Me on my shelf, waiting for a nasty cold so that I can snuggle down with it for a giggle."

The responses from other readers has been equally interesting and full of good book recommendations:  

NogDog took a chance on the dark satire Death and the Penguin by Andrey Kurkov, and reviewed it favorably. 

David McCullough's John Adams was picked up by bordercollielady, who says she's "not much of a history buff but his writing style reads much like a novel. I didn't want it to end."

33 A.D., by David McAfee, was recently read by Ann in Arlington. She notes that "I am NOT a person who likes horror at all. No zombies or vampires or anything like that. But the set up of this book intrigued me.  When he put it on sale for 99¢ I decided that it was worth a try at that price. I came away very impressed with how he made his vampire based story work within the accepted events of Holy Week, and actually tied it into the question of who wanted Jesus dead and why."

From the KindleBoards forums, here's a  "real reader" list of indie authors who draw the reader in, and thrill and inspire with their works:

KindleBoards reader Ann Herrick recommends Tina Boscha. Her novel, The River in the Sea, starts with a 15-year-old girl in Holland in WWII era accidentally hitting and killing a dog belonging to a German soldier, and the book "really drew me in."

JFHilborne enjoys the humorous mysteries of Cindy Sample and Gayle Carline.

Jasonzc is a fan of the prolific Catt Dahman of Texas, who writes novels of "horror/romance/high weirdness."

BTackitt likes "Dennis Batchelder, David McAfee, C.S. Marks, David Dalglish, John Fitch V, and soooooo many more.. But none make me cry and laugh like this series: (Witches on Parole, by Debora Geary)."

SMRG and many others love Hugh Howey's Wool series, describing it as "Wonderful sci-fi dystopian/post apocolyptic books."

Theaatkinson reads almost exclusively indie and recommends Suzanne Tyrpak and KC May. She adds, "I also really love the voice of the NightWalkmen by Jason McIntyre. Some really amazing writing from all three."

From CoffeeCat: "Cheryl Kaye Tardif's The River was so engrossing for me. I've read a couple other books by Tardif and have never been disappointed."

Also from CoffeeCat: "She's not so indie now but Karen McQuestion writes beautiful stories as well. I thought her reads would be light beachy sort of stuff but so far what I've read have been beautifully crafted with plenty of layers and subplot."

Balaspa recommends Bryan R. Dennis with his "fantastic" debut novel, An Epitaph for Coyote. And Blake Crouch for his novel RUN.

MLPMom and sarahdalton are among the readers who recommend Imogen Rose's Bonfire Chronicles.

Have you heard of "pedal error"? That's the term automakers use to explain certain accidents where someone steps on the gas instead of the brake.

Well, it seems many of us experience "button error" with our Kindle Touch readers. As KB member SeymourKopath puts it, "Have you every done this: sit down to read your Kindle Touch and press the Home button to wake it up! There are only two buttons on it. One of them wakes it up. You'd think by now I'd get it straight which one it is." As the thread indicates, Seymour is not alone. Fortunately, there's no harm done when you suffer from "button error"!

In our Kindle Accessories board, our readers are giving a warm response to our recent blog post about Kindle bag designer Borsa Bella. 

In our Book Corner, KB member Cindy416 is finishing Vince Flynn's Memorial Day and plans to start Act of Treason, another Vince Flynn novel. Cindy has read nine of Flynn's books in the past month - and they're about 450 pages each! She reads them on her treadmill and advises that "If you like political thrillers, you'll probably love these books... Reading these books is like eating potato chips.....can't eat/read just one."

Hunger Games series has now outsold Harry Potter on Amazon

I'm a big fan of both the Hunger Games and the Harry Potter books.

My oldest daughter was an age match for Harry, and so each year as a new Harry Potter book was released she could relate in a special way to him. My two younger daughters had little interest in the series, until I read the first book aloud to them on a camping trip. Now they're hooked, and are walking encyclopedias of Hogwarts trivia and factoids.

It took me a little longer to warm up to the Hunger Games, but that changed when my daughters' book club started reading it. The books are certainly darker than the HP series, and I wished for more of a redemptive ending to the series, but all three are still among my all-time favorites.  

I was intrigued to see in today's New York Times that the Hunger Games has surpassed Harry Potter as Amazon's top selling series of all time. Amazingly, Hunger Games did this with three books, outselling the seven Harry Potter books combined.

I believe that a major reason for this shift is that J. K. Rowling resisted selling digital copies of the Harry Potter books for so long. And, they're still not available directly from Amazon, but instead through a pathway into Rowling's Pottermore site.

It's well established that e-reader owners read more than average, and I've certainly found that to be the case for me personally since I bought my first Kindle. I have to think that the all-time bestseller status would be different if the Harry Potter series had gotten on board earlier; certainly the Hunger Games has ridden the digital wave to its great benefit. 

In any event, they're both fantastic series and I have much respect for both J. K. Rowling and Suzanne Collins.

Trivia note: Amazon also noted that in the UK Amazon site, the 50 Shades erotic series has now outsold the Harry Potter series... a travesty in my book!

New Kindle release expected, as current Kindle models become unavailable

An update to Amazon's line of Kindle Fire tablets and Kindle e-readers is widely expected in the next few weeks. In addition to the clues about Amazon depleting its inventory of current Kindles, we are now seeing limited availability for certain Kindles. Specifically:

The Kindle Touch (without special offers) is no longer available on Amazon.

The Kindle Touch 3G (with special offers) is now listed as shipping in 7 to 10 days, rather than the usual overnight shipping

The Kindle Touch 3G (without special offers) is no longer available on Amazon.

Still available for overnight shipping, as of this writing, is the $79 basic Kindle, the $99 Kindle Touch (with special offers), the Kindle Keyboard (with or without special offers), the Kindle DX, and the Kindle Fire.

We'll continue to watch for availability changes in these e-readers, especially as we draw closer to Amazon's expected release announcement!
